Beaver Leader Names

Hi all

I am having a little bit of a debate with my BL at the moment about naming
of us leaders and lodges. He claims that historically the leaders were all
named after Jungle Book characters and had colour lodge names - I am under
the impression that it is actually only Cub Scouts who use Jungle Book but
am prepared to admit I am wrong if indeed I am (everything I have read on
various websites indicates that I am right)

Please let me know whether I am correct and also can anyone give me some
ideas what their own Beaver Colonies use for leader and lodge names. We are
considering the use of Wind in the Willows as our theme but wondered what
everyone else does.

Thanks

Our beaver colony uses animal names, in theme with the Beavers.

So our leader is Squirrel, with Badger, Owl, Wolf etc, as leader names too.
Others have used trees (willow, rowan etc). It has just been a choice what
seemed apt for each individual group.

I was always taught that the Jungle Book is for Cubs, with Akela as
traditional CL name.

Anyway, it should be a decision that all the leaders agree to.

any names you want. But akela etc are cub names so best steer clear of
those.

we have mufasa and rafiki at the moment. Before that we had Lee (he
didn't want a name, he felt silly) and before that it was badger and
otter.

In the grand scheme of things no it doesn't really matter but at least if he
continued to argue the point with me I can say that I have "x" amount of
people involved in scouting who say otherwise.............

As other have mentioned our are Wind in the Willows I think - things like
Badger, Squirrel etc.

Our Beavers wear the maroon woggle with a little circular sticker on it
signifying which lodge they are in. They are named after the seasons.

The lodges are rarely used but come in useful when they need to be in a
group for activities over a few weeks.

I would go along with that it is either Wind in the Willows or Trees for
Beavers but there is no hard and fast rule. The Jungle book has always
been traditional for Cubs but of course not all Cub Packs use it with
the exception of Akela which seems to be used for the Leader in
virtually all Packs.

Always useful when you find a Cub who is lost at a major event. Which
Cub Pack - no idea. Who did you come with - Akela.
Anyone seen Akela?

We don't have lodges, but give them in turn red, yellow and green woggles
as they get older - i.e. at any one time the oldest third have green
woggles. For things like crafts they work on a table of their colour. For
games we usually split them up into ad-hoc teams when necessary.

Our group has 2 colonies, which are called Lumberjacks and Mounties.
Our Beaver leaders all take the names of birds, so we have Condor,
Kestrel, Merlin, Falcon and Phoenix.

Our cubs don't have an Akela! When the previous encumbent left and I
took on the role of CSL, I wanted to keep my Jungle Book name, as I
felt very attached to it! The cubs soon got used to the idea (we still
use Akela in the Grand Howl), but it does cause a little confusion
with visitors when they are talking with the cubs and refer to "your
Akela". I have to stop them butting in and trying to explain!

We use colours - Red Beaver, Yellow Beaver, Orange Beaver.... for the
warranted leaders & the YLs are known as Beaver <Christian name>.

I'm still known by my Beaver name at Cubs as it's a temporary
arrangement, but they still use Akela for the Grand Howl

There is no fixed naming rule - we can use our imagination.

Some colonies adopted the Friends of the Forest. At one time there was
talk of adopting Hiawatha (and LowerWatha?) in a similar fashion to the
Jungle Book. A lot of colonies named their BSL as Ameek.

Choose your own names.

We adopted Canadian trees - Pine, Redwood, Maple, Willow. The leader in
charge of each colony was respectively Blue Beaver, Red B, Yellow B,
Green B. I am Blue Beaver. Our Young Leader is Grey Beaver.

Another colony adopted our local aircraft - Beaver Lancaster, Beaver
Bomber, et al.

One bearded leader in another colony asked the Beavers to name him - he
is now a very happy Fungus!

So we still have complete freedom which has always been one of the
attractions of the Beaver Section.

I'm Badger, Beaver Scout leader, previous leader was Fox, first BSL as
also Badger.
Following the woodlands theme Lodges are Ash, Beech, Oak & Sycamore.
Woggle's worn are either std. maroon red, last years celebration or soon
to be issued to them (at Easter) 2007 leather, other plastic coloured
are for Scubs not Beavers to avoid confusion when linking.

Beavers is based on the Beaver program from Scouts Canada.

Like Cubs is based on The Jungle Books, Beavers is based on a book
called Friends of the Forest. And, like Cubs, Beaver leaders usually
take their names from the names of characters in the book that the
program is based on.

Traditional Beaver leader names are:

Tictac
Rusty
Sunshine
Rainbow
Brown Beaver

and a few others that I can't remember right now.

Don't. Our district has an adult sized beaver outfit. So, at

It is for reasons exactly like this I did not want to be called "something"
beaver. Working in the local school as well as the Beaver section I can
imagine that the few scouts that attend the primary school who are at that
rather impressionable age would find it extremely funny to make certain

My old group had a family camp on Brownsea island several years ago and
the Scouts for no obvious reason (yeah right) decided to christen the
Beavers as "Smurfs" and their leader as "Mama Smurf" - we all thought it
was hilarious but she didn't seem so amused.
