Post by Eddie LangdownHaving managed to source cheap lable sheets, ink cartridges and other
stuff...
has anyone managed to crack the cost of Tilley and Gaz mantles?
Bulk buying?
What price are you paying at present?
I can pay about £4 for 3 tilly mantles and about £3 ofr 3 Gaz mantles.
Sorry I don't think I can can suggest anywhere that sells much cheaper
than that. To be honest I don't see this as a major cost, unless
we're really clumsy we don't get through very many mantles, looking
back I haven't bought any for over 7 years.
Lucky you....
I find they tend to get broken during transit, getting a good shaking in the
back of the van. But the other reason i would like to find cheaper ones is
simply becuase it would be useful being able to let scouts practice changing
them. One of my leaders went on a NA course and ( ok so I was amazed they
did ANYTHING practical) the leader took talked them through changing the
mantle, and them said they couldn't do it becuase they were so expensive!
To be honest, i can't believe there's;
A. Not a factory churning the things out for tuppence each somewhere.
B. Not an alternative non- disposable jobbie not been invented.
When I worked in an engineering works there was a scout leader who tried
weaving one out of stainless wire. it just didnt give enough light BUT he
found a Tilley Heater in a jumble sale, identical to a lamp, but with a huge
angled reflector and it worked a treat on that.
I will keep looking!
