Discussion:
Explorer activities for after an event?

We run an annual adventure race for Explorers in our area. It combines
canoeing (Canadian), hiking, mountain biking, and abseiling. Teams
finish at varying times in the afternoon and have some time to kill
before the closing banquet.

Currently we have made crate stacking and cave ladder climbing
available; both ideas liberated from the UK. These have both worked
well. Slack lining is another idea we have had.

I was wondering if anybody had any other activity suggestions?

Thanks,

Allan.

That looks like a fantastic event. Now thinking, how can I put that together
for our Explorers? Would they be up for it?

If I said we were going to Canada, I guess they would be...

Interesting comment, as I would consider events like The Apex
Challenge to be more challenging. Though I admit that all the incident
hikes I have seen in the UK are on foot only.

The Apex Challenge is right on my doorstep but at one point there was no way
I'd have let my Explorers loose without a leash and frankly, I didn't think
that they had the skills to take part. Also, I increasingly find that we
have had to build a self contained operation over the years due to the lack
of local support. So our programme is actually quite busy anyway, and
sometimes entering them in external events actually screws up scheduling for
our own programming. For example, they pay for the kayak course - peanuts,
but it JUST covers costs and no more, we book 10 weekends for either a
Saturday or a Sunday, and they are asked to make 8/10 weekends - which
shouldn't be too difficult. However, by the time they dial in clashes with
DoE Expeditions, band practice, family weekends, some only make 5 or 6/10
and the parents then seem to expect us to provide additional weekends. It
happens that we do offer another two as freebies, but we don't tell them
that.

Our District hasn't run an Incident Hike in oh, I'd guess over 20 years,
certainly not the last 17.

I am reluctant to do one for my district because I doubt very much there
would be enough people to help or take part.

Ah! That is a massive factor, all talk and very little action.

Let me tell you a story... ( Max Bygraves mode on....)... No, I'd better not

I have hit in a new plan. Smaller activities planned for only half a dozen
kids, money paid well in advance, and let it build from there.

I think that some of mine would, but the cost would put most off.

Agreed, I think that would be a big + but I am fighting against "world
challenge" and "rayleigh" wotsit from the two local Grammar Schools and
parents assume that these would awlays be better than anything we could
"scratch together"
