I tried finding the basics that i needed regularly from scoutbase...

Logos... still can't find them - i've looked quite hard, can;t find
them anywhere

Factsheets... still can't find them - i've clicked on loads of stuff,
are they on there?

Badge requirements... found them easily

so... big step backwards?

Scoutbase has been integrated with Scouts.org

Go to the "official" website and select Member resources from the top
menu bar.
If what you want is not visible in the left hand menu, do a search.

No, Scouts.org says Scoutbase has been integrated, that's not the same
thing.

There was always the attitude that Scoutbase was run bu amateurs, which was
wrong. They were professionals donationg their time for free. Big
difference.

I remain convinced that the real reason scoutbase was absorbed and ditched
was that Gilwell wanted total, absolute control, so they swapped to
something that nobody else could change.

The trouble is that knowing how to set up a website and how to manage t
effetively are completely differrent, which is why us, the end users, have
to jump through hoops to use something that feels far more unfriendly and
outdated than Scoutbase ever did.

Free, yes - and there's a school of thought that points out that what's
free is rarely valued. Sometimes it surprises me to look back and
realise that the calibre of the SBUK Team - along with the many others
around the country who helped (again free) - was quite something. You
get involved on one level i.e. Scouting, and often never get to take on
board your colleagues standing in his/her professional life. Bit sad
really to see all that expertise studiously ignored.

'manage' ? 'manage' ?? Someone once accused me of having confused logic
with the planning application process at a local Council - I think you
may be straying into the same sort of territory Stephen ;^)

Hi All,

Scoutbase seems to still be online. To access it you need to know the
factsheet number.

Here is the one for Archery.

I don't know how many fact sheets there are, but needing to know the
relevant number to find any particular one seems to be making it hard
work :-(
I did try to find the one on air rifle shooting, and no, I didn't know
the number. It took a long time but in the end I found the fs number in
the POR reference. So, am I missing something? Is there an easier way?
Surely this constant re-work of the site must have improved the old SBUK
way of looking up the subject in the site Library?

Indeed it is - in fact, the alleged "new" location for the Fact Sheets in Member Resources is just a series of pointers to the existing ScoutBase library.

Comments sent to ***@scouts.org.uk as follows:

Sirs,

I found searching the Members Resources area extremely difficult, for the information I required - and I consider myself to be a very competent online user.

Specifically, I wanted the "new" locations for the Nights Away Permit Scheme information, fact sheets, and application forms.

Firstly, it's not clear that users need to be logged in to find the resources. Whilst I understand that these are resources for members, and are therefore legitimately not available to unregistered users, it should be emphasised that a login is required in order to access certain pages.

Secondly, apart from wanting the various fact sheets and permit application forms, as a Nights Away Adviser I wanted to check if the Assessment Checklist has been updated.

From this page, https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources, I had to click on the link for "Activities", taking me here:

https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/search?cat=26 - not exactly a "memorable" link name, like the original ScoutBase version, is it?

I believe that access to the information could be improved by adding a separate heading in the left menu *of the first page* for "Nights Away".

From the "cat=26" link, I had to delve even deeper into the hierarchy, clicking on "Nights Away", to take me here:

https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/search/?cat=26,358

Then, I had to drill down AGAIN, clicking on "Permit scheme" in the sub-menu, to take me here:

https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/2869/nights-away-permit-scheme?cat=26,358&moduleID=10

This initially displayed a Security Warning dialogue box had been displayed at *EVERY* link I have had to drill through so far - somewhat repetitive and unnecessary by now, don't you think?

On clicking "No",to the request to display only the secure parts of the web page, I was presented with a page that appeared to have links to the Fact Sheets and Adobe pdf files that were so easily found before in the ScoutBase Library.

Not so.

As I'm sure you are aware, the page now displayed contains the following words:

"You can find full details of the Nights Away Permit Scheme in the factsheets below..."

But, the factsheets were *NOT* "below". What *is* below are further links with descriptive text which redirect to to header pages, thus:

FS120800 Nights Away Permit Scheme http://www.scouts.org.uk/fs120800
FS120801 Nights Away Permit Scheme - Applicants' guide http://www.scouts.org.uk/fs120801

FS120802 Nights Away Permit Scheme - Assessment guide https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/2869/ww.scouts.org.uk/fs120802

THE ABOVE LINK IS A BROKEN LINK!

Searching for "Assessment Guide" revealed the following link:

https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/2863/nights-away-permit-scheme-assessment-guide-fs120802

But, as with all of the other links, this was still not a direct link to the pdf file I needed. This was arrived at by drilling down further to http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/library/hqdocs/facts/pdfs/fs120802.pdf. I note that this link is still to ScoutBase!

WHY, OH, WHY, CAN'T I GET A DIRECT LINK TO THESE FACT SHEETS FROM THE LEFT HAND MENU?

The Permit scheme sub-menu also contains links to the following:

FS120803 Nights Away Permit Scheme - Commissioners' guide http://www.scouts.org.uk/fs120803
FS120804 Nights Away Permit Scheme - Nights Away Advisers guide http://www.scouts.org.uk/fs120804

It goes on further to give a link to:
AC120990 Assessment checklist for a Nights Away Permit http://www.scouts.org.uk/ac120990
Which, of course, is yet another header page, needing further drill-down! Initially, that link was also broken - but that seems to have been fixed.

Anyway, having eventually retrieved the information I needed, I opened the application for a Nights Away Permit document (Microsoft Word). This document contains an embedded link at the bottom right, to "second page if needed" - but, of course, that is now a broken link. Thus, that Word document needs an update. There are probably many other similar Permit application forms that need updating. As I am also ADC (Activities), I anticipate having lots of cries of "HELP!" from confused users.

All in all, a most unsatisfactory experience, which has taken me at least 30 minutes to navigate. *PLEASE* try to improve on this!

Sincerely,
